Our Manufacturing: ISO 9001 + 14001 Certified

When we tell you we are committed to doing the right thing, how do you know what we mean by the right thing? For that matter, how do we know? We turn to the International Organization of Standardization (ISO) for some clarity and measurable standards. ISO sets and maintains all kinds of standards for business and industry, and ISO-certified systems meet management standards that are recognized worldwide.

ISO 14001 specifically monitors actions that may affect the environment, to ensure that they are understood, planned, controlled and checked. This certification is a path to continual improvement through rigorously documented steps toward specific environmental goals. Certification (also sometimes called "registration") also includes significant training and system auditing, so all those involved are aware of and can improve upon their actions.

Mannington's Environmental Management System (EMS) was first third party certified to ISO 14001 in 2004 in New Jersey at our commercial tile and commercial inlaid sheet operations and next in 2005 at our Georgia carpet operation and all successfully recertified ever since. Our Quality Management System (QMS) has been third party certified to ISO 9001 in our North Carolina laminate operation since 2003 and our New Jersey tile and inlaid sheet operation since 2004 and all successfully recertified ever since. The result is a highly organized and structured approach that ensures the efficient, effective management and continual improvement of our environmental and quality systems.

This third party certification is focused on the way we run the entire facility, so it means we have ISO certified plants, not ISO certified products. However, we do expect product quality to improve, and our environmental footprint to decrease, as a result of these efforts.

As ISO standards require rigorous system verification, a third party registrar most recently audited our New Jersey location in October of 2008 and our Georgia location in November of 2008. Our laminate operation in North Carolina was audited in May, 2008 to ISO 9001. The specific findings from our auditors, NSF, are:

Carpets, Calhoun, GA – One Minor ISO 14001 Nonconformity:
  • Control of Universal Waste was not effective as required in section 4.4.6 Operation Control.
Inlaid and Tile, Salem, NJ – Zero Nonconformities for ISO 14001 and ISO 9001.

Laminates, High Point, NC – One minor ISO 9001 Nonconformity:
  1. Control of an external document was not effective as required in section 4.2.3 f) – Purchasing process.
We promptly addressed and corrected all audit findings.

In our ISO 14001 environmental managements systems, we evaluate the significant environmental aspects and impacts of our activities, products, and services at least annually and establish specific objectives and targets for continual improvement.

For 2009 in the Georgia carpet operation, we're focusing on:
  • Increasing products certified to the NSF 140-2007e EPP (Environmentally Preferable Products) standard
  • Increasing the recycled content of specific products, while maintaining or improving product quality, durability, and performance
  • Continuing reductions and more effective management of plant waste streams
  • Implementing a variety of water reduction and energy management initiatives
  • Documenting greenhouse gas inventory for corporate wide GHG baseline
For 2009 in the New Jersey commercial sheet and tile operations, we're focusing on:
  • Continuing operational waste reductions
  • Obtaining product certifications to the draft NSF 332 EPP (Environmentally Preferable Products) standard
  • Increasing the recycled content (including post-consumer) of specific products, while maintaining or improving product quality, durability, and performance
  • Reducing process energy usage and resulting emissions
  • Increasing focus on energy management and greenhouse gas emissions
  • Documenting greenhouse gas inventory for corporate wide GHG baseline
These continual improvement systems are making us better. In 2009, we are expanding our ISO 14001 Environmental Management System to the residential sheet operations in New Jersey.
