Porcelain Tile Terms
To assist you with the terminology, here are some general terms associated with porcelain tile flooring:
  • Abrasion Resistance: The degree to which a tile's glaze will withstand the wear of foot traffic.
  • Breaking Strength: The degree to which a tile will withstand breaking stress.
  • Mohs: A scale of hardness developed by the German mineralogist Frederich Mohs. Range from 1 (talc) to 10 (diamond).
  • Shade Variation: Any variation in color or texture from tile to tile.
  • Water Absorption: A percentage of water absorbed by the body of the tile.
